Today kicks off World Space Week which means there are plenty of online events happening this week in space. Here in Chicago things are a little quieter, but there is still plenty of space to explore.
This is your guide to what’s happening this week in space.
Space Center Exhibits, Cernan Earth and Space Center, River Grove, M-F 9:30-4:30
The Cernan Earth and Space Center is home to a small exhibit of space artifacts celebrating the Apollo program and the life of astronaut Gene Cernan. The planetarium and in person astronomy events are on hold until further notice, but guests are welcome to stop by and view the space displays in the lobby. More info here: Cernan
Launch of Soyuz MS-19, NASA TV, 3:15 am CT, Tuesday October 5th
Early Tuesday morning the crew of MS-19 will be launching to the International Space Station from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The launch isn’t until 3:55 am Chicago time, but coverage of events begins about 45 minutes earlier. Later on in the morning NASA will broadcast docking and hatch opening events. Watch here: NASA TV
Naperville Astronomical Association Monthly Meeting, Naperville Municipal Center, 7-8:30pm, Tuesday October 5th
In person monthly meetings for the Naperville Astronomical Association have resumed. This month’s lecture topic is, GW190814: the Kilonova that Wasn’t. These meetings are free to the general public and a great opportunity to network with other amateur astronomers. Meeting information here: NAA Calendar
World Space Week, Global Events, October 4th-10th
World Space Week is an international event started by the UN in 1999 to to celebrate the contributions of space science and technology to the betterment of the human condition. This years theme celebrates Women in Space and thousands of in person and global events are being hosted all over the world. There are no events in Chicago or Illinois, but plenty of online events to join in on. Event Map: WSW
