The much anticipated SpaceX Dragon Spacecraft that arrived at the Museum of Science and Industry in December of 2022 is finally on exhibit and opening to the public. Today, MSI Chicago announced that the exhibit will open later this month, on May 19th.
The Henry Crown Space Center, where Dragon Spacecraft will be displayed, has been closed since the beginning of the year while work was being done to prepare the space for the new exhibit. Admission to the Dragon Spacecraft exhibit does not require an extra ticket.
The highlight of the new exhibit is the flown Cargo Dragon Spacecraft, C113, which carried out two cargo resupply missions to the International Space Station between 2017 and 2019. In December of 2022, when the spacecraft arrived at the museum, MSI President and CEO Chevy Humphrey told us that evidence of the craft’s flights and reentry would remain.
According to MSI, the new exhibit will celebrate, “its part in history and how innovative technology is writing the future of space exploration.”
“We want to create an experience where people understand the wonder and curiosity of what went behind developing the SpaceX Dragon. We are going to tell its story, compare it to earlier space history, and talk about the future of human space travel.” Humphrey said in 2022.
Currently, the Henry Crown Space Center is home to the Apollo 8 Command Module and the Mercury Aurora 7 Capsule, a Lunar Module Trainer, moon rocks, Frank Borman’s spacesuit, and Apollo lunar tools. In addition to the Dragon Spacecraft, other new artifacts added to the space include a “prototype garment and biofeedback belt worn by Mae Jemison.”
